The second weekend of April has a busy one for Africans on social media. As if the red-carpet premiere of Netflix’s “Queen Charlotte,” and the highly anticipated Spotify x Thebe Magugu “Fashion Forward” experience was not enough, Coachella has been setting the Internet abuzz at the same time.
Despite some people believing that Coachella has lost its rank as the premier music festival globally, it is still anticipated by many and remains a highlight on their calendars.
One key reason is fashion. Some attendees spend months planning the perfect festival look that they hope will impress. Some make sure that they bring a new, chic takes on what constitutes ‘festival fashion.’

UNCLE WAFFLES
Amapiano front-runner Uncle Waffles sent the Internet into a three-day frenzy over her Coachella debut this weekend.
Uncle Waffles spent Sunday afternoon basking under the Californian sun, revelling in American salads – the much-deserved rewards of her labour. This was ahead of her sharing the stage with other global musicians, including Frank Ocean, EarthGang, Burna Boy and K-Pop sensation Blackpink. As is custom, Waffles brought the homegrown genre of Amapiano to one of the most coveted world stages – and looked sensational doing it.
Making her Coachella debut, Waffles rocked a pink nylon jumpsuit with an iridescent dotted detail and feathered trim, evoking an abundance of volume and maximalism. Her signature dance moves were further accentuated by a giant, taffy-pink organza outerwear piece, while her cherry-red hair gave the look an extra pop.
For her set at the DoLab stage, she opted for the Crochet Couture ZA's "Merino Blend Scribble Set," a mini-skirt and halter top in taupe that blended right into the desert setting. To round out her festival look, she topped it all off with a platinum blonde hairdo.
It is an incredible time to be on the Internet – we are witnessing the making of a musical and fashion powerhouse in the leagues of Brenda Fassie and Lebo Mathosa. With the entire world’s eyes on her, Uncle Waffles is making “it-girl” strides right before our very eyes.
THUSO MBEDU
The actress has been attracting attention from the fashion industry for some time and is currently an ambassador of Dior Parfum’s newest scent, Gris Dior.
While macrame, cut-outs and bright colours are always the go-to looks for Coachella attendees, the award-winning Thuso Mbedu decided to look effortlessly cool.
She chose to sport the athleisure trend, dressing for comfort more than to standout, which ultimately lead to her standing out. She harkened to the 90s in satin Nike Tearaway Wide Leg Pants with an oversized satin track t-shirt with snaps.
It was quintessentially 90s, but also very modern. She has shown over the past few months how she can go from high glamour in Dior couture, to street style perfect a few days later.
